2. 2. Analyzing the Cohesion and Deixis in an article

a. Australian Prime Minister Julian Gillard has survived a week-long political crisis, winning a ballot among Labor Party members of parliament on Monday.
b. But the strife within the ruling party has further sapped public confidence in the government.
c. The crisis began early last week when local media reported that Gillard’s advisors were agitating to sack Kevin Rudd, then foreign minister, because they believe he was maneuvering behind the scene to oust her.
d. Gillard replace Rudd as a prime minister in a party coup in June 2010, a slight he apparently hasn’t forgotten.
e. Before Gillard could act this time, Rudd resigned last Wednesday and then mounted a challenge for the party leadership.
f. The labor party has managed to hold onto power this long, even without a majority in parliament, in part because of a weak opposition.
g. Liberal leader Tony Abbott has yet to detail what his tax policy would look like, aside from the repeal of the carbon and mining taxes.
h. The liberals have resisted Gillard’s policies valiantly, but to win they need a platform that promises Australians relief from the infighting and a better future.

“Were agitating” in the sentence (c) refers to the time when the Gillard advisors agitate to sack Kevin Rudd is happening in the past and at the same time so, the local media reported it.

“Has managed” in sentence (f) show that the time labor party holds onto power is not long before the news being published and “this ling” in this sentence is also include temporal dixies, it refers to the time during the crisis.
“Has resisted” in sentence (h) refers to the time the liberals resist Gillard’s policies is not long before the news being published
