The notion of discourse study is the study to understanding the text according to its contexts.
2.   2.    Analyzing the Cohesion and Deixis in an article
The article taken from The Jakarta Post Wednesday February 29, 2012
a.       Australian Prime Minister Julian Gillard has survived a week-long political crisis, winning a ballot among Labor Party members of parliament on Monday.
b.      But the strife within the ruling party has further sapped public confidence in the government.
c.       The crisis began early last week when local media reported that Gillard’s advisors were agitating to sack Kevin Rudd, then foreign minister, because they believe he was maneuvering behind the scene to oust her.
d.      Gillard replace Rudd as a prime minister in a party coup in June 2010, a slight he apparently hasn’t forgotten.
e.       Before Gillard could act this time, Rudd resigned last Wednesday and then mounted a challenge for the party leadership.
f.       The labor party has managed to hold onto power this long, even without a majority in parliament, in part because of a weak opposition.
g.      Liberal leader Tony Abbott has yet to detail what his tax policy would look like, aside from the repeal of the carbon and mining taxes.
h.      The liberals have resisted Gillard’s policies valiantly, but to win they need a platform that promises Australians relief from the infighting and a better future.

*      “Has survived” in sentence (a) show the time Gillard survive the long-week political crisis is not long when the news being published.  
*      “Early last week” that show the beginning of the crisis in sentence (c) is a week before the news published in other words if the news published in Wednesday, February 29, so the crisis begin in Wednesday, February 22 in can be not in Wednesday but in any day in a week before the news published.
*      “Were agitating” in the sentence (c) refers to the time when the Gillard advisors agitate to sack Kevin Rudd is happening in the past and at the same time so, the local media reported it. 
*        ‘this time” in sentence (e), show the time when the crisis is happening
*      “Has managed” in sentence (f) show that the time labor party holds onto power is not long before the news being published and “this ling” in this sentence is also include temporal dixies, it refers to the time during the crisis.
*      “Has resisted” in sentence (h) refers to the time the liberals resist Gillard’s policies is not long before the news being published

B.     Cohesion

*   They in sentence (c) is anaphoric reference referring to Gillard’s advisors and Foreign minister and he also anaphoric reference referring to Kevin Rudd.
*     “He” in sentence (d) is anaphoric reference referring to Kevin Rudd  
*   “They” in sentence (h) is anaphoric reference referring to the liberals   
2)      Ellipsis
*   Crisis in sentence (b) is noun ellipsis because “the crisis” here refers to “political crisis” that mentioned in sentence (a) then in sentence (b) the word “political” is omitted.
3)      Conjunction
*   “But” in sentence (b) is paratactic conjunction
*   “Then” in sentence (c) is hypotactic conjunction and “because” in this sentence is hypotactic conjunction
*   “Before” in sentence (e) is hypotactic conjunction and “and” is paratactic conjunction and “then” in this sentence is hypotactic conjunction.
*   “Because of” in sentence (f) is hypotactic conjunction and “even” in this sentence is also hypotactic conjunction
*   “Aside” in sentence (g) is hypotactic conjunction and “and” is paratactic conjunction, “aside” in this sentence is also hypotactic conjunction.

SLPD ASSIGNMENT I

Saya telah mengamati beberapa orang dan dari pengamatan tersebut saya mengetahui bahwa:
1.       Saya bercakap-cakap dengan seorang ibu di sebuah angkot. Dari percakapan tersebut saya menyimpulakan bahwa ibu tersebut bersifat exhibition, yaitu suka mendominasi pembicaraan, karena sepanjang perjalanan ibu tersebut terus berbicara tentang keluarganya, pekerjaannya, terutama anak-anaknya tanpa saya tanya terlebih dahulu.
2.       Saya telah mengamati seorang teman saya yang bernama Ilma, dari pengamatan tersebut saya tahu bahwa dia adalah seorang yang open minded, karena dia pintar sekali membuat suasana dan member memeberi feedback, dan dia juga pintar menghadapi macam-mcam pribadi, apabila saya berbicara dengan dia, saya merasa senang.
3.       Orang ketiga yang saya amati yaitu teman saya, dia adalah tipe loner karena dia sangat pendiam sekali dan tidak suka berbicara banyak. Ketika saya bertanya maka dia hanya menjawab sekenanya.
4.       Orang keempat, dia teman kuliyah saya, dia adalah seorang yang bertipe exhibition. Karena dia sangat cerewet sekali dan sering sekali keceplosan  mengemukakan tentang rahasia yang seharusnya tidak dikatakan dan juga suka mendominasi pembicaraan bahkan kadang tidak memberi kesempatan pada temannya untuk memberikan feedback.
5.       Orang kelima adalah juga teman kuliyah saya, setelah saya amati ternyata saya tahu bahwa teman saya tersebut bertipe open minded, dia selalu mendengarkan apabila temannya berbicara dan dia juga selalu memberikan feedback yang baik. Dia juga seorang yang sangat ramah sekali dan menyenangkan apabila berbicara dengannya.
